Yes, well, I usually remove the wheel too, but on the rear of the tandem that's not so easy. I refuse to carry a 19mm wrench for the axle nuts! We've had one rear flat, a slow leak that appeared about a mile into a planned day ride. I pulled the tire partway off the rim and the tube partway out of the tire with the wheel on the bike. Otherwise we'd have walked home.
