I'm not a follower of racing so I don't know the whos and the whys of bicycle racing, but is there any video of this crash? I would imagine a rock strike hard enough to do that kind of damage, there would almost have to be some kind of evidence on video.
I've hit rocks hard enough to flatten a tire and ding an aluminum rim and that's been enough to bounce me off the seat.
