Might be that you living in the land of 10,000 lakes are getting your water from a "surface" source and it is likely that trnsntr water source is well water. Well water will have much more hardness along with Silica compared to surface water. If that well water is also alkaline, then it could scale rather easily when heated.
Def not well water and before Mpls, it was NYC - both love to trumpet the quality of their tap.
