I start work at 7, so I fully acknowledge that's just too early (for me) to get up and ride to work regularly. But during Bike to Work week, we have contests and raffles at work, so I participate purely for the free stuff. I ride a bike as a hobby, for fitness, for the challenge, etc, not for the utilitarian purpose, though I certainly can appreciate those who do.
Sometimes I ride to work at 5.30am. sometimes I ride to work at 17.30pm.
The only notable difference is there are fewer people to negotiate at 5.30am.
