There is a man made dam that was built in the 1800s to help supply the city with water. That resulted in a little ria/cove area above the damn. Over the last few years the city has made improvements to that area. The water is very calm there. Lots of water fowl hang out. A local who was down there told me that’s where they took up residence a couple of years ago.

Decades ago there was a fish ladder built on the opposite bank for migrating species. I saw a guy reel in a 23” stripper not far from where I saw the beavers. One inch below the limit at the time.
There is a lot of rowing on the river above the dam. You’ve probably heard of the Dad Vail Regatta. There is a cable stretched across with lines that dangle into the water in case people are about to get swept over. The cable is often occupied by black cormorants.
