Let's Talk Tires

I just snagged a Specialized Crossroads XC Pro at an absolutely INSANE price and am looking forward to riding it. As with most people and their bikes I have to do a few things to it to make it viable for me. The first thing on my list is a new saddle. I went for a 10 mile ride this afternoon and it felt like someone was using a baseball bat on my rear end and not in a good or enjoyable way. Next on the list is new tires and this is why we are talking.

My bike now currently has 622 x 18 rims per the tag on the rim. The current tires are Specialized Armadillo 700 x 38 again as per the label on the tire. These tires are as heavy as what I would expect to see on a semi-truck and IMO have got to go. I would like to put a Continental Ultra Sport tire in size 700 x 28 but I am not sure if this would work so I am putting it out here. Any ideas, suggestions, opinions??
