Follow this procedure:

Loosen the shift wire from its clamp screw and proceed as if it is a new installation. Finish each step properly before you proceed and do not skip any steps.
My guess is that you did not have your shifter in the highest gear (most relaxed shift wire) position when you attached the wire.
