Even if you have a pretty good feel for normal red light duration, it's not always possible to know how long is left on the cycle.

Do you start slowing early, in hopes that you'll still be rolling when it turns green? Or do you gamble that green will come sooner, and brake late?

It's quite the conundrum.
Then there's the question of whether the last car approaching in the crossing lane will jump the red light. In these parts it's considered a weakness to not jump the red. And I sometimes fear getting rear ended as the guy behind me is ready to do it too
