Unless he is a racer or a really aggressive rider doing hard group rides, some might look at him like a poseur. You don't want to be THAT guy with the uber expensive bike getting owned by riders on entry level bikes. You probably wont be able to tell the difference. It is pretty much a show off factor. No offense, and your friend will do what he wants, but this is what a friend told me when I was inquiring about carbon wheels back then.
