I pretty well gave up sugar, too. It helps me stay within a calorie budget, as I don't get hungry again as quickly.
I was up to 330 about 6 or 7 years ago. With a good diet and lots of cycling, I got down under 220 and stayed there (at 6'4", my ideal weight is probably a bit lower, but not too far off). I got off my blood pressure meds, too.
