On Saturday I cycled and hiked to the Tokyo Peace Pagoda. It's an Indian style stupa, actually a copy of an ancient Buddhist stupa. A twin copy stands in Dhauli, India. Both of them are modeled after the Stupa of Amaravathi, built by the Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE.

The stupa stands on a mountaintop, reachable after a half hour hike up a gravel road after a 7 hour bike ride from Tokyo. It was completed in 1974 by Nipponzan-Myōhōji, a Buddhist organisation in Japan working for world peace.
