I don't know. I never fiddled with headsets till last month the Bianchi's was loose, so I watched a couple videos and did what they showed.
Bike must be on the ground, as you state. Even then, it seems to take a lot of force to get the play out of the stack, so I back off the cap after I nip up the stem.
