I may have mentioned this but there is a 4000 foot high hill right behind the house here and hang gliders launch from there and they have a little airport for them to land down low. It has wind socks, a big grassy area, and a graded flat area in case the grass isn't big enough. It also has rest rooms and parking but I don't know who pays for it.
When I lived in Anchorage, there was a mountain behind my house, and hang gliders would launch there. The wind would flow up the face of the mountain in such a way the hang gliders would just float in one place right above the mountain for hours.
