Ditto on using HR monitor......
Ride Zone-2 (Zone-5 system.....70-75% MHR)......keep out of higher zones for most of your ride.
You will need a decent HR monitor.
I went with an IGPS Sport GPS Bike computer, and bought a Garmin-compatible HR strap. Less than $100 all in.
