The previously undisclosed reason for our extended visit over Christmas was my father in law's pancreatic cancer diagnosis. The reason for the return is that he had a turn for the worse shortly after we left, landed back in the hospital and they updated his outlook, shortening it to days-to-weeks.

Upon receiving the news, the wife and kids flew ahead by plane, just in case it went quickly (the boy was adamant about being here for Grandpa) and then I packed up the necessities (and cat) for an extended stay and drove solo over the course of two days.

FIL is in rough shape, wife is taking leave to assist over sleepless nights, while I'm assisting with the day-to-day, provisioning and cooking, etc.
