In the big ring the outer part of the derailleur is too close to the chain? If the cable isn't tight enough it won't matter how much you loosen the screw. The screw is to limit the movement of the derailleur, the shifter is supposed to put it in the right place. If the shifter cable is frayed the first thing you usually notice is the cable seems loose.
