I thiiiiiink Subaru did it first, here, in cars. Then Toyota did it with the Prius. The problem is putting much power through it. Also, Nissan is, ah, not great on the engineering front, so having them bolt a CVT to the back of their excellent VQ engines was a recipe for disaster.
Prius uses one of the Motor Generators (I think MG2) to control the sun gear in the planetary. It is such a bad ass CVT, I don't think anyone can top it. Honda had a variable belt type deal, and I honestly don't remember the Subaru ever having one.
