Not at all. Prior to the trip I tried to learn some from a phrasebook, which I promptly forgot upon arrival - except for some key politeness items. Then I broke the camera on my phone, which disabled the written language portions of my translator app. That was dumb.

But most of Japan's transport infrastructure (road signs, train station signage, etc) is noted in English as well as Japanese. And people were very helpful. So my tour was still very manageable and enjoyable.
