As a fellow parent of a kindergartner, I think you've missed the box bike phase.
I think we have another year or so until the kids will want to stop riding, but planning ahead is good. I'll always have a need to haul stuff around town even when the kids are riding on their own.
A box bike has a huge cool factor, but a flatbed cargo trailer and an xtracycle or two would work be much less expensive.
