When we received the news, my initial thought was that my wife would be going to VA while I stayed back with the kids.

The boy was adamant even though I told him that it would be hard to witness and that his grandpa would be in even rougher shape than only a couple weeks earlier. Poor kid has had a crash course with death lately, losing three pets over two years, and now his grandpa.

Then the wife pipes up and says that she'd really like me to come, too, because it would be a trying time for her. So yeah, since I couldn't leave the three year old behind, that made all of us.
I got essentially that crash course in my late 20s and early 30s. It may be better for him to go through it younger, or not, but when I showed ROTJ to AG for the first time (seriously) a few weeks ago, the one Ewok poking its dead friend hit me harder than ever before. We don't get to choose when we lose family members, but I can't imagine that being there is the wrong thing.

My grandmother (my one remaining grandparent...) is currently in ortho rehab from breaking her femur so bad last week that her xray looks like scaffolding. She'll be ok though, at least.
