Well some faith restored in Garmin. I tried again via online chat. They offered a full warranty so sending mine in tomorrow.
You'll get on with the new screen. After 8 months mine is still good. When you get the refurb you'll still have to do the updates for the firmware and maps. There is a guide on the files to backup and transfer to the new units. Not that big a deal if your rides are on Garmin Connect.
