I think the main drawback to the wheel-on trainer has to be tire wear. Luckily, I have my old 1986 steel bike as a dedicated trainer bike that has not been on the road for a few years, and it has an old tire I installed so I don't care about the wear.
Certainly if you only have one road bike and will want to go frequently back/forth between road and trainer, it makes more sense to cough up the extra dough for a direct-drive trainer IMO.
