I believe this is because he uses the Strava app on the watch and starts his rides there instead of the iPhone. I never tried that because you can't use Strava's tracking feature when you start the workout from the watch.

I'm now using a Wahoo heart rate strap which works fine.

It's frustrating and it seems like both would be easy for Strava to fix. And it's not like folks aren't requesting these features.

Yup, Strava will work on JUST the watch. I like my phone on the handlebars so I can get all my info at a glance, and Strava won't do that. The Strava official support forums are filled with complaints about that, along with people cancelling their premium memberships...and it goes back several years. Strava's only response is consistently "we'll ask our development team to look into it".
