Wouldn't pumping up a tire not on a rim stretch it more?? it lets it expand more in every direction?
you don’t care about “every direction” only getting past the rim circumference. just getting it on the rim can be a struggle without stretching.

No. The rim forces it to full diameter. Much easier at final installation time if pre-stretched.
