Do it, I think the only downside is sometimes you get a yellowish crust if the concentration is too strong. Or you could try phosphoric acid (my choice as it's faster-acting than oxalic but downside is the raw steel that's exposed goes black) or Evapo-rust or a molasses/water solution (both of these are chelates I believe)... None of them should affect stable chromium but it there rust underneath chrome that could cause flake off.
