So I'm still taking the horse chestnut hoping it will stop the spread and keep the vein size and appearance under control.

If you have or are developing them see a doctor. The laser thing can be done in the morning and you can be riding the next day. Surgery requires several days in the hospital and no riding for a couple of weeks. Neither treatment option offers any guarantees that v veins won't show up somewhere else in the legs at a later time.
