I have never used one so i dont know the specifics, like if it even keeps the chain entirely off the ground
I've got them on a bunch of my vintage geared bikes, and it definitely keeps the chain from messing up the chainstay when you remove the rear wheel. It also makes it easier to get the freewheel onto the derailleur and chain when installing the wheel. I love them and wish my newer geared bikes had them.
