In general, the largest tire that will fit in your frame will be more comfortable and offer more traction (than narrower tires). The theoretical downside is speed, but many studies have shown this not to be a significant factor. It's even less of a factor for most riders in most situations (where you're not measuring lap times in tenths of a second).

If your frame can fit them, modern gravel tires in the ~40mm size range are generally very good, and offer a great blend of comfort, rolling resistance, etc.
