if the tape is thicker, no way is that going to work.
The adhesive tape is thinner, yes, but it sounds like there's something off in your technique - you shouldn't have trouble getting both sidewalls into the trough during installation. I manage to do it with latex tubes and not pinch them, and I'm a ham-fisted idiot.
