I've done A rides on my gravel bike with the 40mm tires (they're not MTB knobbies, but they have pretty good tread, not filetread/slicks), like you said, just ride smart and be willing to put in a lil extra effort. Not winning any sprints, but I can hang in there and do some pulls. Makes for a good workout. lol
