One lane shared between cars and bicycles ... only the cars are coming toward me and the bicycles are going the opposite direction, toward the cars. And that was not a wide lane.

And nooks next to the sidewalk, although probably the sidewalk too, for parking.
Here’s a proper Torontonian solution; in Boston, the signage likely would be ignored.
