Basically, what this allows you to do is to pull the plunger partially out, to create a very low pressure in the syringe barrel, and that very effectively purges air bubbles from the system.

I had to look up Luer Lock AKA slip tip.
High vacuum grease... Yikes! That stuff is expensive.
Experimenting, I actually tried pulling back on the syringe and got some air out but could not tell if some of it was air getting past where the hose attaches to the bleed nipple. What you recommend makes perfect sense to me.
I really appreciate any advice at all.
