I used to have a darkroom, and I've done a lot of (too much) image scanning. Using an image scanner by yourself will only work if you are retired and have tons of free time to devote to this. The amount of work it takes to scan, correct, and print images is phenomenal. Much smarter and better quality to go with a service. There are several around, including this one:
