I don't think it is backwards. Brakes and tires are the number one upgrades to any land vehicle.

Jenson has the matching DA levers for bullhorn bars. I like their price match feature. Bike Recyclery has a pair of Cane Creek TT levers for $20 if you are looking for used. The SRAM carbon levers are really nice looking.
