Go for it! A conversion on the cheap can be a fun experiment. As you go on, the more steel components you replace with aluminium the lighter the bike will get. Keep the cost in mind as you go. If you really want to jump into the SS/FG world consider getting a specific Track or road FG frame. Build as you want.
