Bear precautions on the GAP/C&O?

Last time I didn’t bother. I camped 3 nights on the GAP, there were never any bear boxes, and no one else was hanging their food, so I figured western PA must not be bear country, so I did nothing. Then, within sight of the divide on my last day, a big, black bear crossed the path. So then I thought, “I guess I am in bear country after all. Maybe I should have been hanging my food.”

So now I’m getting ready to go all the way to DC, and I thought I’d ask if anyone worries about bears in that part of the country.
