That would be a neat trick, biking from western Mexico to the southern tip of Texas without traversing the border area.
I've toured in central & southern Mexico and had no problems at all, but riding from Mazatlan to Matamoros doesn't sound like a brilliant idea. That route would take you through remote desert areas in various Mexican states where cartels are quite active.
