I'm an extrovert, so I generally acknowledge the other cyclist in a manner consistent with the context. If we're crossing paths at high speed in the opposite directions I wave and go on. If we're stopped at the light I carry on a few seconds of smalltalk.
There isn't any real requirement of exercising cyclist solidarity, any more than motorists need to be smiling and waving at one another. But that sort of greeting is easier on a bicycle, so I do it.
