As far as the shifter goes, I would think that the width of the freewheel/cassette from smallest to largest cog would mandate how well it works. For instance, okay on 130mm spacing, better on 126mm spacing, best on 120mm spacing. I would think that the shifter doesn't care if its corncob or mega-range gears. Its the derailleur that must match the range of cogs.

**One thing that I didn't account for is the radius of the cable channel on the shifter. A larger diameter means less pullback; whereas, a smaller diameter means more pullback.
