I think a lot of folks around here take up walking for exercise when winter comes, but just as many get out their XC skis, and a much smaller group get their studded bike tires on.
Why is it: I like to walk, but yet if I go to a store, I'll circle around 3 or 4 times to get a parking space near the store? Yet I'll come home, and that same night stroll around my hay field/pasture for an hour and walk nearly 4 miles! (Guess I don't like walking in ugly parking lots!)
