+1 on tri shorts.
IME, the longer inseams are more stable and comfortable on the bike. I own a couple pair of shorts with a shorter inseam, and they tend to rub or ride up on longer rides. I do not like them for anything more than putzing around town.
Embrace the tan lines - other cyclists will know what's up.
