it's 8.0 miles from my home to my office via the MUP route.
there's a more direct 6.9 mile route, but i almost never ride it because it's 100% city street, and with traffic and traffic control devices, it's not really all that much quicker from a time standpoint.
and the slightly longer MUP route gives me 6 miles (75% of my total route) of car-free riding on a lightly used MUP that goes through a pleasant greenway/sculpture park that runs along a canal.
i figure that the less i have to interact with impatient/frustrated/irritated chicago rush-hour car commuters, the better.
in years past i've had regular one-way commute routes as short as 4.6 miles and as long as 15.2 miles.
8.0 miles is a nice "in between" distance. long enough to feel like a proper ride; short enough to not be too onerous from a time standpoint.
