I remembered I had one break on my touring bike someplace in Kentucky. I had a spare with me but it was some kind of universal wire that had a ferrule on each end, (different sizes) so I had to cut one off to use it. The only thing I had was a nail clipper and I hacked through it with that. I think I still have those clippers around here somewhere, they're damaged from cutting the cable.
