They'd be following several thousand people, and usually have a similar but smaller number of people following them. I guess it's all "kudos farming" in some sort of perverse effort to build a "brand" as a social media bike person.
Anyway, on Zwift... as others have said, it's just as hard as an outdoor ride and it's recently a necessity given that I have to watch our infant while my wife sleeps and I ride the trainer before work. Rather get some work inside in than no work at all, and it has the added benefit of actually usually being a better workout since there aren't any interruptions.
