I once had a house with a Hardie Shake roof, and really liked it. There ended up being a class action over it because it would curl, but we never had that problem. The siding did not ever have that problem. They make some of there products not far from here, and one of my clients sells sand to them. They're products have more texture and look more like wood than vinyl does.

In my mind, the Hardie products are a "higher end" product. We have a couple of dormer style extensions on our roof, and the siding on those is Hardie, but the amount of it is very minimal.

I've never had vinyl siding though.
