Our house has 2200 square feet (not counting basement which is half finished and might add another 600 if you count the finished part), which is more than enough space for a family of 4 IMO.
If I were to get rid of half of my son's toys, our 1200sq ft house would be plenty.
....though when the kids get just a little older, continuing to share a room is going to cause some strife.
