The pads should be adjusted to rest flat against the braking surface when applied with just the slightest toe-in. Aluminum rims work better than steel.
Thanks for the suggestions, by now it kind of fixed itself. I think it was just the unfamiliarity with the brake-lever combo and a few minor adjustments did the rest. (I had to delete your posted linkes, otherwise I couldn't have replied.)
