I wear wool socks year-round, but my body has a propensity to collect fungus. I got those fungus-y toenails, which were gross. So I have two rules about socks: (1) no cotton socks ever, and (2) change my wool or synthetic socks every day.
Have you tried sandals during summer time? My SPD sandals work fantastic at keeping my feet comfortable, either when it's hot or raining. I stop wearing them when temperature drops below 15C in the morning.
