We have a relatively new outdoor velodrome just south of Charotte. Ours is a concrete surface instead of wood. I have a number of cycling friends who use the facility regularly. It sounds like if you're unfortunate enough to take a spill it's a very hard contact with the concrete winning. One my buddies took a spill and broke his shoulder and collarbone. I'm sure it's a great time but just hasn't grabbed my interest enough just yet.
