There was a time when bikes had dropouts without an integrated derailleur hanger. A "claw" was attached to the fixing bolt of the derailleur. The claw was held on by a small nut and bolt and the wheel axle did the rest. The derailleur in question is a long cage Simplex Prestige circa 1972.

Now I know why people look at my bike all befuddled, and I in turn look at there modern bike and scratch my head.
